Cricket's three formats and why they differ

In Bangladesh, cricket is more than a game — it is a passion. The excitement people feel about every Bangladesh Tigers match carries over into betting as well. But to understand betting properly, you first need to be clear on the differences between formats.

T20

20 overs per side. Odds move fast in this quick format — BPL and IPL are played here. It is the most popular format among bettors because results come quickly.

ODI

A 50-over match. Played in the ICC World Cup and bilateral series. Slightly more strategic than T20 — the toss and pitch conditions carry more weight here.

Test

The longer five-day format. A draw is possible, so the range of markets is wider. It gives patient bettors more time to think.

BPL, IPL and international matches

BPL is Bangladesh's own T20 league, where local and overseas players compete together. It is especially familiar to Bangladeshi bettors because the teams are well known and there are many matches. IPL is India's franchise tournament, but it has a huge following in Bangladesh — so IPL betting markets stay active too. The T20 World Cup and other ICC tournaments are the biggest betting events at the international level.

You can also bet on football and other sports at 399 bed. The market structure for football differs from cricket — for example, a draw is a separate result in football, which does not exist in T20 or ODI. Handicap and corner markets are popular in football, while wicket and run-based markets dominate in cricket.

5 popular betting markets explained simply

Cricket betting offers many types of markets. For beginners, starting with simpler markets is the smart move. Five common markets are explained below.

Match Winner

Picking which team will win the match. Example: bet on either Team A or Team B. The most common market in T20 and ODI.

Simple

Toss Winner

A bet on which team will win the toss. It has no direct connection to the match result — the toss is a separate market.

Independent

Top Batsman

A bet on which batsman will score the most runs in the match. Can be within a specific team or across the entire match.

Performance

Total Runs Over/Under

A bet on whether the total runs scored in the match will be above or below a set number. Example: will total runs be more than 300?

Run-based

Multi Bet

Placing multiple matches or markets together in a single bet. If all selections win, the return is larger — but if one loses, the entire bet is lost.

High Risk

Top Bowler / Wickets

Markets on which bowler will take the most wickets or who will take the first wicket — a bowler's current form matters here.

An example of a multi bet

Say you pick three different teams to win in three separate matches. If the decimal odds are 1.40, 1.50 and 1.90, the combined odds come to 1.40 × 1.50 × 1.90 = 3.99 (approximately). With a ৳100 stake, if all three selections win you get back ৳399. But if even one selection loses, you lose the full ৳100. Multi bets carry higher risk, so it is best to treat them as entertainment.

Decimal, fractional and American odds in one place

Odds can be written in three formats, but each one expresses the same information differently. Use the two examples below to understand.

Example 1 — the same odds in three formats

Place a ৳1,000 bet on Team A to win. The same odds written in three formats:

Format Odds Explanation
Decimal 2.25 Multiply by your stake: ৳1,000 × 2.25 = ৳2,250 total return (৳1,250 profit + ৳1,000 original stake)
Fractional 5/4 ৳5 profit for every ৳4 staked. On a ৳1,000 bet, profit = ৳1,250
American +125 A positive number means that amount of profit on a ৳100 stake. On a ৳1,000 bet, profit = ৳1,250

If Team A wins, total return is ৳2,250; if they lose, you lose ৳1,000.

Example 2 — odds for the favourite

The same bet with Team B as the favourite:

Format Odds
Decimal 1.80
Fractional 4/5
American -125

With a ৳1,000 bet, if Team B wins you get back ৳1,800 in total (৳800 profit). In the American format, a negative number means you need to stake that amount to make ৳100 profit.

Cricket betting is for ages 21 and above. Betting is for entertainment — not as a source of income. Please play responsibly.

Live betting — how odds change when a wicket falls

Live In-Play

Placing a bet before the match starts is called pre-match betting. Live betting is the option to place bets while the match is in progress — and that is where cricket gets most interesting.

Say Team A is in a strong position in the 15th over of a T20 — Team A's odds will shorten and Team B's will lengthen. But if Team A's batting suddenly collapses and two big wickets fall, the odds flip. These changes happen quickly in in-play betting.

Between overs you can also find smaller markets like how many runs will be scored in the next over, or whether the next ball will be a six. In Test matches there are session-based markets, such as the run total before the tea break.

Live betting requires quick decisions, so a good internet connection and a fast device matter. That is why many people use the 399 bed App — find out more about downloading and using the 399 bed App.

Practical tips for cricket betting

Betting is part of entertainment — and to make sure it stays that way rather than becoming a problem, a few basic points are worth keeping in mind.

  • Set a budget first
Decide in advance how much you will bet each day or week. Do not go beyond that limit — regardless of whether you are winning or losing.
  • Focus on one market
Beginners are better off starting with the match winner market. Betting on too many markets at once makes decisions harder.
  • Understand the format before betting
The same market works differently in T20 and Test. Consider pitch conditions, weather and each team's recent form as a general guide.
  • No big bets after a loss
Placing a sudden large bet to recover losses is risky. If you lose, stop and think it over calmly later.
  • Learn about responsible gaming
When betting starts to feel like a burden, it is important to seek help. Read our responsible gaming guide.
  • Know the rules and terms
Read bonus and betting terms carefully. All the details are on the terms and conditions page.

FAQs

Cricket betting FAQs

In T20, matches end quickly so odds shift fast and most markets revolve around runs and wickets. In ODI, session-based and powerplay markets are popular. In a Test match, a draw is a separate result, so the match winner market has three options — Team A wins, Team B wins, and draw. Test matches also have innings-based and day-based markets.

Decimal odds are the simplest: stake × odds = total return. Example: ৳1,000 × 2.25 = ৳2,250 (৳1,250 profit + ৳1,000 original stake). With American odds, a positive number (+125) means that amount of profit on a ৳100 stake; a negative number (-125) means you need to stake that amount to make ৳100 profit. Fractional 5/4 means ৳5 profit for every ৳4 staked.

It depends on the rules of the specific market and platform. Some in-play markets do not allow a bet to be changed or cancelled once placed — especially after the ball has been bowled. So it is a good idea to read the terms carefully before placing a live bet.

If a match is abandoned or the result is decided by the Duckworth-Lewis method, betting rules may differ. Generally, if the required number of overs has not been completed, the stake is refunded, but each market has its own rules. It is important to know those terms before betting.

Since BPL is Bangladesh's own tournament, Bangladeshi bettors are more familiar with the teams and players. IPL markets tend to have higher liquidity because of greater international bettor participation, which can make odds more competitive. Both leagues share the same T20 format market structure.
